Munich is a city where I am happy to repeat myself. A pastry near the market. A walk towards the river. A neighbourhood square with somewhere to sit. Coming back regularly has made me less interested in constructing an exceptional day and more interested in the ordinary one that works so well I would gladly do it again.

For July, I would give the city two days with plenty of outdoor time and a couple of meals worth sitting down for. The first moves from the old town across the Isar into Haidhausen and the Au. The second stays farther south, with the river, Nockherstraße and Giesing. You can do much of it on foot, using a tram or the U-Bahn whenever the distance starts to feel like an obligation.

Start with the pastry

Café Frischhut, just by the Viktualienmarkt, is the sort of well-known address that keeps earning its place in a city routine. The Schmalznudel is the reason to go: a round of fried yeast dough with a thin centre and a more substantial edge, best approached while warm and with enough time for coffee. I would make that breakfast, then see what looks good at the market. There is no need to begin the morning with two full meals.

The Viktualienmarkt is useful even if you have been before. Buy fruit, bread or something for later, ask before photographing a stall up close and keep moving when other people need to shop. Then get out into the neighbourhoods. The river makes a natural break between the centre’s busier streets and the afternoon’s more relaxed pace.

Day 1From the market to Haidhausen and the Au

Begin at Frischhut, then browse the Viktualienmarkt before walking towards the Isar. Cross the river and make your way into Haidhausen, with Wiener Platz as a loose target. The square’s small market and surrounding streets offer plenty of reasons to stop. Take a look along Preysingstraße, where the smaller old houses give the district a different scale from the grander Munich façades. I like keeping lunch light here. Buy something at the market if it appeals or find a table nearby, then spend the afternoon walking through the neighbourhood rather than returning immediately to the old town. A good Munich day can contain quite a lot of sitting without ever feeling empty. Book an early dinner at Wirtshaus in der Au on Lilienstraße. Dumplings are a sensible place to focus your attention; check the current choices and order for the appetite you have brought with you. The restaurant gives the day a warm, substantial finish. Afterwards, the walk back towards the river is enough evening entertainment.

  1. 09:00–09:45 · Coffee and a Schmalznudel

    Café Frischhut

    Prälat-Zistl-Straße, by Viktualienmarkt, Munich

Order a warm pastry and coffee. This is a popular local institution, so allow a little flexibility for a seat or a wait.

  2. 10:00–11:00 · Shop for something to eat later

    Viktualienmarkt

    Viktualienmarkt, 80331 Munich

Come on a normal market trading day and check holiday arrangements. Buy a few picnic ingredients rather than treating working stalls as a photo backdrop.

  3. 12:00–15:00 · An afternoon in Haidhausen

    Wiener Platz and Preysingstraße

    Wiener Platz, 81667 Munich

Walk across the Isar, then explore the square and nearby streets. Leave room for a light lunch and a long sit; individual market stalls keep their own hours.

  4. 18:00–19:30 · Dumplings in the Au

    Wirtshaus in der Au

    Lilienstraße 51, 81669 Munich

Reserve a table and look at the current dumpling dishes. Allow time to reach the Au from Haidhausen; this is the day’s substantial meal.

Follow the river south

The Isar is part of Munich’s daily life, and in summer it is tempting to regard every space beside it as an invitation to stay. Choose an appropriate public place, leave no litter and keep the paths clear. I would make this a walk and a picnic. Swimming needs a separate decision about the permitted place and the conditions that day; a pretty stretch of water is not enough information.

Giesing gives the second day a more neighbourhood-focused destination. Around Nockherstraße and Kronepark, the city has room for smaller pleasures. Crönlein, the bar-café in the park, is one address to check when planning an afternoon pause. Farther up at Giesinger Bräu on Martin-Luther-Straße, the brewery’s Wirtshaus makes a good reason to stay for dinner. Save that address carefully: the brewery also has a separate site in the north of Munich.

Day 2Isar time, Kronepark and a Giesing evening

Start at the river around Reichenbachbrücke and choose a walk south along the public paths. Bring a small picnic, pause wherever it is comfortable and keep an eye on the weather. July can turn a long exposed walk into a less appealing proposition; shade and a shorter route are reasonable improvements to any plan. Later, head into the Au and towards Nockherstraße and Kronepark. This is a good stretch for noticing the smaller buildings and the change in pace away from the centre. If Crönlein is open, stop for a drink. If it is not, the park is still worth the pause. Continue to Giesinger Bräu for dinner and order from the current Wirtshaus menu: perhaps a Brotzeit, perhaps something warmer and more substantial. The brewery’s beer is an obvious option, with an alcohol-free drink an equally easy way to enjoy the table. Stay long enough that dinner becomes the evening, then use public transport back to your base.

  1. 10:30–13:00 · Walk and picnic beside the Isar

    Isar riverside

Reichenbachbrücke, Munich; continue south on public paths

Bring lunch and water. Choose a suitable place to sit, take everything away and treat river swimming as a separate activity requiring current local guidance.

  2. 14:30–15:30 · A neighbourhood pause

    Kronepark and Crönlein

    Kronepark, near Nockherstraße, 81541 Munich

Walk through the Au towards the park. Crönlein is an optional bar-café stop; check its current hours before relying on it for food or drinks.

  3. 18:00–20:00 · Dinner at the Giesing brewery

    Giesinger Bräu Wirtshaus

    Martin-Luther-Straße 2, 81539 Munich

Reserve and confirm service. Use the Giesing Wirtshaus address, not Werk 2 in the north of the city. Choose a beer or alcohol-free drink and something from the current menu.

Keep a little Munich for next time

Haidhausen or the Au would be an appealing base for this particular stay, though a good transit connection matters more than a fashionable address. Start the route on a Thursday or Friday if possible, and confirm market and restaurant hours for your dates. For rain, shorten the river day and allow a longer meal; you can return to the water when the weather improves.

The thing I want to take away from Munich is often a habit rather than a revelation. Where to begin a morning, which way to walk after lunch, a table I would be happy to book again. Two days spent like this can be wonderfully complete. Next time, I might change only the pastry—or decide that there was nothing wrong with the first one.
